Your pet’s relocation to foreign countries
A move to a foreign country has to be well prepared. This also applies when it comes to our furry family members. Tips & tricks how you can prepare your pet’s big journey:
1. Import requirements - documents
Start checking the restrictions of the country of destination well in advance. Certain country require preparations of more than 6 months. Be considered with the order of the microchipping, vaccinations, blood tests, etc.
2. Travel crates / Kennels / Training
To minimize the stress, we recommend to buy the travel crate well ahead of time. Have your pet get used to the crate. With shy pets, you can start by leaving the door away and work with goodies. Later you should lock the door for a short while and step by step lenghten the period.

This is Hank, ACE's office dog, showing how cosy a travel crate should be
Feel free to also lift the crate (as long as the weight and size allows it) to imitate the loading and unloading process. For dog owners living next to an airport, we recommend walks around the area.
Put in a blanquet and absorbant material for comfort and soaking purposes. Feel free to add a piece of cloth that bears your scent.
Certain travel crates available in pet stores are not suitable for transportation of dogs and cats as cargo. Even though you can find a little icon showing a plane, it doesn’t mean that they comply with the IATA regulartions.
Dogs and cats must be able to stand upright inside their travel crate, without touching the roof with their head or ears. They must be able to turn around easily and lie down in a comfortable position.
Snub-nosed dogs and cats require a travel crate largen than normally used to assure plenty of airflow. Please consider that certain airlines do not accept certain breeds (i.e. bulldogs, terrier, etc.).
3. Labeling
Label the travel crate with the name of your pet, shipper’s and consignee’s address and emergency phone numbers. Mark any special behaviour (i.e. „may bite“) or medical instructions on the crate.
4. Food and water
Dogs and cats can go without food for several days without taking any harm. Animals may react with an upset stomach during stressful situations. We therefor recommend not to feed dogs and cats short before departure.
However, water is very important and must be provided at all times to avoid dehydration. Freeze the water prior to the transportation, to avoid spillage when loaded.
5. Tranquillizers
During air travels as cargo, tranquillizers are not allowed. Dogs and cats can not control their body temperature under the influance of tranquillizers. At high altitute tranquillizers may act differently and the consequenzes may be fatal.
6. Booking
Contact the airline well ahead of time to check if you can carry your pet on the same flight. Each airline has different requirements, where some do not accept pets in cabin or as excess baggage. Be aware that certain countries will only allow pets to arrive as cargo: i.e. Australia, Neuseeland, Great Britain, South Africa, Hong Kong, United Arab Emirates, Kenya and further.

ACE Pet Moving is available for flight booking as cargo. We look forward discussing the best option, routing and possibilites with you.
