COCO – Our „Calendar Pet“ of February 2011
A proud lady looks at us. The photo has already been sent to us well ahead of time with the request to use this for our gallery. Coco celebrated her eleventh birthday in September 2009. Her current home at this time was Budapest, but her owner (Swiss) accepted a new challenge to work for some time in South Africa. This adventure could not been missed by Coco.
Coco's owner had been informed early on the import restrictions for South Africa, so that Coco’s move will run smoothly. The application for the import permit was lodged in December 2009 but the owner did not receive a response from the South African Ministry until January 2010. With the cooperation and assistance of our partner in South Africa, the permit was completed and the owner finally received the original and we got a copy. A copy of the import permit is necessary for the flight reservation status and getting the cargo booking confirmed.
The entry of live animals to South Africa is only possible as manifested cargo. So that owner could meet her family and friends again, she booked her flight to Johannesburg via Zurich. We suggested that she takes Coco to Zurich as excess baggage and we will book her on the same flight as the owner to Johannesburg.
We have sent the health certificate for South Africa to Coco's owner, which she had completed in Budapest and endorsed from an official goverment veterinarian there. She informed herself and organized the appointments early - within the period of validity, so that we could send a copy of the certificate to South Africa for pre-approval. The cooperation and communication went smoothly with the owner!
One year ago from today, the adventure began! We met Coco and her owner after her arrival from Budapest at Terminal 1 at Zurich Airport. Since Coco’s travel box was not IATA conform and not sufficient for the cargo transportation we exchanged the crate and handed Coco over to Swiss World Cargo with her original documents (Air Waybill, South Africa import permit, health certificate and Swiss pet passport).
"Lady" Coco arrived safe and sound in Johannesburg and was collected by her owner. We recently received a message that Coco might just get a "new friend" from a local rescue center.
